Background Glass working in ancient Egypt dates to the 3rd millennium BCE, during the Early Dynastic Period. The earliest glass objects were made using a technique known as core-forming, followed later by a technique known as glass blowing, where a glass cylinder was formed around a metal rod or a shaped core of clay or mud with molten glass. This allowed them to create vessels and with a hollow center. The Ancient Egyptians were the first to perfect glassblowing. Although glassblowing as a technique did not emerge until the Hellenistic period, some evidence suggests that the Egyptians may have experimented with rudimentary glassblowing methods, such as inflating glass bubbles through a blowpipe to create small glass objects. Extensive glass manufacture in Egypt started in the beginning of the New Kingdom with the Eighteenth Dynasty (1550 BC). The largest glass blowing factory was in Egypt’s Tall el-Amarna. Egyptians not only perfected the art of glassblowing but developed a sophisticated culture of color and reflection surrounding glass.
